Paraguay: an analysis of its participation and future challenges in the multilateral trade system (1995-2016)

Abstract

This paper seeks to elaborate on the fundamental aspects of Paraguay's participation in the multilateral trade system and its future challenges, with the purpose of achieving a more in-depth understanding of the ways in which this initiative has benefitted the country. For this purpose, bibliographic-documentary research at a descriptive level is used, combining the analytical and synthetic methods. The article initially presents the institutional aspects of the WTO, and subsequently delves into Paraguay's participation in this organization. This is analyzed through its activity in different levels, a review of its commercial policies and the evolution of different indices. Finally, the challenges faced by the country in the framework of the Trade Facilitation Agreement negotiated in 2013 are presented.
