Abstract

The present article will provide some general historical notes to understand the role played by the Brazilian Catholic Church through the Basic Ecclesial Communities that allowed their religious space to reconstitute the popular social healing against institutionalized violence practiced by the military governments since 1964 to 1985. One of the hypotheses proposed by the author is that the Basic Ecclesial Communities were part of the new social movements that helped to return to democracy through the formation of democratic values that contributed to the corrosion of the military regime's authoritarian practices.
